Villetta Sampaguita – Your Home in Piedmont, Italy

(Average 0 of 0 Ratings)

After years of globe trotting why did this baby boomer end up in Piedmont 20 years ago? A short answer is that our adopted region has arguably the finest wines and cuisine in Italy and the culture is not shabby either. Most people think of Italy as Rome, Florence and Venice, all wonderful places to visit if you don’t mind the crowds and the flavour of mass tourism which thankfully has missed Piedmont.

After 18 years of operating an agriturismo and small winery, Tim and Rina have downsized to a charming house overlooking the historic UNESCO-listed castle of Govone, with two elegantly decorated boutique apartments for short or long term rental. Yes we can also do B&B on request but we are set up for people who want to spend some time relaxing and exploring all that North West Italy has to offer.

We are located in the Roero hills, one of Piedmont’s world heritage vineyard landscapes, with many hiking and bicycling trails, famous for wine honey and peaches. We look over the valley towards Barbaresco and are 15 minutes drive to either Asti or Alba. If you don’t want to drive we will pick you up the train station and there is a regular bus between the two towns. Barolo is a short drive away and Turin, one of Italy’s best kept secrets, seat of the former Italian Royal family and loaded with palaces and museums, is 30 minutes away by car or train; Genoa and the Ligurian Riviera are an hour away; Milan and Lake Maggiore are day trips as is the alpine Val d’Aosta region.

Piedmont is stacked with Christian heritage sites for those who are inclined, from early Romanesque churches such as the Abbazia Vezzolana built by Emperor Charlemagne; the Sacre San Michele, the inspiration for “The Name of the Rose” and the world heritage sacred mountain pilgrimage sites the most famous is Varallo built in the 15th century to replicate Jerusalem. And of course, the famous Shroud of Turin. Let’s also mention the incredible baroque synagogue in Casale Monferrato, a Jewish heritage site.

Tim and Rina have a wealth of local knowledge and can guide you on wineries, food tours (nearby Bra is where the Slow Food movement started) and cultural attractions; we can organize tours with or without a driver (see our separate listing Palio di Asti and Alba Truffle Fair Tours). There are many wine and food festivals all year around; slow food events; white truffle festivals and the Palio di Asti, the oldest one in Italy.

Last but not least, Rina is a fabulous cook who is acclaimed by both our many guests over the years, and our Piedmontese friends; we have regular cooking classes in-house accompanied by of course local wine tasting.

We invite you to come and share our experiences with you.
